As Women’s History Month comes to a close — KRON4 is highlighting a couple of women who, despite the pandemic, decided to open up a small coffee shop this past September. Nirvana Soul Coffee not only offers coffee, tea, and waffles but also space to find a little bit of peace during these trying times.

Entrepreneurial sisters Jeronica Macey and Be’Anka Ashaolu have brought their long-held dream to fruition: Their Nirvana Soul coffeehouse opened in late September in downtown San Jose’s SoFA district.

Jeronica Macey and Be'Anka Ashaolu had the wheels in motion for their new coffee shop in San Jose when the pandemic hit hard in early 2020. Despite the obvious hurdles this created, the two sisters were able to open their doors that September and thrive as the local community rallied to support them.

It’s a Black woman–owned cafe founded by sisters Be’Anka Ashaolu and Jeronica Macey; Ashaolu transitioned her skills as a vice president of marketing at Propel tech company to grow the brand. Nirvana Soul started growing its online community via Instagram for two years before it opened in 2020, and its account now boasts nearly 14,000 followers.
